Safer Area
West Midlands Police statistics show that there has been a 59.6% reduction in general crime in the Broad Street area during the BID’s first year to 31 March 2006 compared to the same period during 2004/05. Violent crime was also down by 27.6%.
The Broad Street area has been awarded a ‘Safer Business Award’ in recognition of the efforts by the RCO, Birmingham City Centre Partnership and the BID, to ensure a safe business environment.
Together with the work of the new Street Warden Team and West Midlands Police, the BID has also worked closely with Birmingham City Council on the effective introduction of late night Taxi Marshals. Available on Friday and Saturday evenings, the service has helped to reduce problems encountered by customers waiting for taxis and helps to ensure they get home safely and quickly. In March 2007 a taxi marshal survey revealed that 91% of customers felt much safer waiting for taxis.
In addition, a number of safe drinking campaigns have been promoted in conjunction with Birmingham City Centre Partnership and West Midlands Police.
