Fans decide Ray Graydon is the man for the star
Earlier this month, the Broad Street Business Improvement District in conjunction with Walsall Football Club launched a public vote to decide which who would receive a coveted Walk of Star on Birmingham’s Broad Street.
Nine Walsall legends, spanning the last seven decades, were nominated by the club and went head-to-head in a public vote to decide who would be awarded with the star.
We are delighted to announce that the winner of the public vote, with a lead of over 200 votes, is Ray Graydon.
Ray Graydon was a League footballer for 18 years, during which time he amassed well over 400 appearances in various competition and scored more than 120 goals. He also enjoyed great success as a manager. Whilst in charge of The Saddlers, Ray lead Walsall to two promotions to what is now known as The Championship.
Speaking earlier Ray said “I am extremely honoured and delighted to have won this award. It’s fantastic news and has really cheered me up as I recover from a recent operation.
“I was up against some legendary figures from the history of the club, so to win means an awful lot to me. Now people can walk all over me on Broad Street!
“I would like to thank all the supporters who voted for me. The club is still very close to my heart and I always keep an eye on its progress.”
The presentation of the star will take place on Walsall’s pitch at half-time at an upcoming Walsall FC game, once Ray has recovered from his operation. Ray is hopeful to be able to attend The Saddlers’ Coca-Cola League One encounter with Exeter City on Saturday, 17th October. BBC WM’s Chris Blakemore will be attending the celebration.
Mike Olley, Broad Street Manager, said “We are delighted to add another such deserving football hero to our Walk of Stars on Broad Street. We’re looking forward to seeing Ray be presented with his star and welcome him onto the walk alongside such stars as Ozzy Osbourne and Frank Skinner”.
