Broad Street is all “Go Go Go” as Murray Walker is announced!

World famous commentator extraordinaire set to be honoured by city.

The world’s most famous iconic star of Formula 1 racing is set to be honoured by his home city and join the exclusive Walk of Stars on Broad Street this summer.

Murray Walker was for decades as much a part of Formula 1 racing as the British Grand Prix. Born in Hall Green, Birmingham in 1923, he became more famous than many of the drivers on whom he commentated.

The iconic commentator will arrive in Birmingham on Friday 27th June and officially receive the Star on Saturday afternoon, 28th June. Final arrangements on timing and venue for the presentation are currently being finalised.

Allan Sartori, marketing director of the Broad Street Business Improvement District, the organisation behind the invitation to Murray Walker said “Murray Walker is a national institution. Millions of viewers were introduced to the previously inaccessible world of Formula 1 through Murray and when he announced his retirement at the end of 2001, it was as if the sport itself had lost one of its biggest stars.

“However, I know that his knowledge of the sport is unsurpassed and this enthusiasm for it remains undiminished. We are extremely proud that he has accepted our invitation to be honoured by his home city and look forward to greeting him here in June”.

The BID team is holding an exclusive black tie dinner at the Hyatt Hotel on Saturday 28th June in honour of Murray with more than 150 guests expected to attend.

Murray’s visit to Birmingham coincides with the launch of his new book called “The Murray Walker Scrapbook”. It takes a colourful rummage through the memories and memorabilia of Murray and is crammed with personal anecdotes and behind the scenes information from every stage of his career. It contains over 500  images, everything from F1 action to Gotchas, and features contributions from many of Murray’s colleagues and friends, including leading sports personalities such as Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton.

Mike Olley, Broad Street Manager added “In the last nine months Noddy Holder, Ozzy Osbourne and Jasper Carrott have all been recognised by Birmingham and we are delighted that Murray Walker’s contribution to sport will be commemorated in this same way.

“We know that he has many fans in and around the city and that he would love to organise a book signing hour or so while he is here. We are currently making arrangement for this to happen. We will obviously keep everybody fully briefed as to time and location.”
